🍓 Melanogaster Fruit Fly Care Guide
(Drosophila melanogaster — the small, non-flying variety)
Melanogaster fruit flies are the most common feeder for tiny mantis nymphs due to their small size, ease of culturing, and fast reproductive cycle.
⸻
🧪 Basic Setup
You’ll need:
•32–48 oz deli cups or culture jars
•Ventilated lids (fabric mesh, coffee filter, or foam plug)
•Dry media
•Excelsior / coffee filters for climbing
•A starter culture of melanogaster flies
⸻
🥣 Fruit Fly Media
Use a commercial media or make your own. Good media includes:
•Potato flakes
•Brewer’s yeast
•Sugar/honey
•Vinegar or citric acid (mold inhibitor)
Add water until the media is like thick oatmeal.
⸻
🪵 Excelsior / Climbing Material
Add a handful of:
•Excelsior
•Coffee filters
•Bamboo shavings
This gives flies places to pupate and keeps the culture dry on top.
⸻
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
•Temp: 72–80°F (higher = faster breeding)
•Humidity: Normal room humidity is fine
•Avoid condensation — too much moisture causes mold.
⸻
